Problematica diferențelor de gen în domeniul dezvoltării morale a suscitat o bogată literatură. În istoria cercetărilor axate pe această dimensiune, cartea In a Different Voice: Psychological Theory and Women’s Development publicată de către cercetătoarea americană C. Gilligan a reprezentat un moment de cotitură. Având o viziune socială și culturală puternic impregnată de orientarea feministă, Gilligan a pus într-o discuție critică teoria lui L. Kohlberg cu privire la stadiile universale ale dezvoltării judecăților morale. Reproșându-i lui Kohlberg faptul că și-a construit abordarea pe un ansamblu de valori morale tipic masculine, Gilligan a oferit o argumentație atrăgătoare, potrivit căreia bărbații promovează moralitatea dreptății și a corectitudinii, atunci când decid ce fapte sau acțiuni sunt acceptabile din punct de vedere moral, în timp ce femeile se preocupă de moralitatea care evidențiază grija și compasiunea față de alții, respectiv responsabilitatea față de starea de bine a lor și a altora. Totuși, rezultatele studiilor empirice care au valorificat viziunea lui Gilligan nu sunt încă concludente. Această lucrare reia problematica diferențelor de gen în domeniul dezvoltării morale, analizând-o prin lentila contribuției lui C. Gilligan și a rezultatelor studiilor care au fost stimulate de lucrările acesteia.
